For the Muslim the answer means, quite simply, to be a Muslim! Yet the follow-on question is not so easy to answer: What does it mean to be a Muslim? Here arises the ﬁrst sticking point, but it is incredibly important: if Islam were to survive at all during those painful birth pangs, then it needed to establish a clear identity, a conﬁdence in itself when confronted by other, more ﬁrmly established religions.
Also, like Alkindi, he had considerable wealth, which allowed him to indulge his interests in a number of intellectual ﬁelds, including musical theory and alchemy, before receiving a formal training in medicine. He gained the reputation of being the unequalled physician in Islam according to a number of sources, and this reputation remained unsullied.
