As with a flat iron, prepping the hair with a heat protectant is always a plus, particularly if it provides some kind of hold. 2. 5 cm. The smal er the section, the firmer the curl. Place the section at the outer end of the iron and let the tongs take hold of the hair. Then rol the iron almost al the way in to the scalp. Hold. 3. Touch the hair and assess. Has the heat permeated through the entire section to the outermost layer? If so, release the tongs. Fasten as you would a pin curl (page 34) and let cool or simply let it loose.
