The uroplakin family is made up of the classically named vertebrate uroplakin (UP) genes and several invertebrate tetraspanins (represented by the well-characterized Drosophila tetraspanin expansion group) as well as TSPAN32 and TSPAN12.

The four transmembrane helices of tetraspanin UPIa and UPIb are tightly packed into bundles which extend to the extracellular domains thus giving these tetraspanins an overall cylindrical shape.
