In Indo-China and Southeast Asia there were intact Imperial Japanese armies in place at the end of the Pacific War. In a confused situation involving Japanese armies, nationalist guerrillas, politicians plus Allied armies and returning colonial powers, the Europeans and Americans attempted to re-establish their positions but they were variously unsuccessful. The Dutch returned to their colonial territory and there were conflicts with nationalists, and after two brief wars plus other local conflicts in the period 1945–50 the Republic of Indonesia was established and the Dutch withdrew.

It is widely seen as a successful security organization. However, it is seen as less successful with regard to economics, where the member countries tend to have similar economies, with much primary production in largely rural agrarian economies. Many have relatively low-tech manufacturing or MNC industry which competes rather than cooperates, plus industry which looks outside the region rather than inside it. However, recent free trade agreements and regional growth areas are viewed optimistically.
