Preparation of transparent microfossils for observation and photography in incident light The uneven surface of translucent and transparent microfossils causes various reflections and refraction of the light, and this makes observation difficult. It is therefore necessary to make the surface opaque before it can be sketched or photographed. This effect is achieved by either covering the surface with opaque material or, in the case of calcareous forms, by heating them. (a) The ammonium chloride method A simple apparatus has been described by Grabau and Shimer (1910) and later by Ulrich and Bassler (1923).

The boundaries of the biostratigraphical zones frequently coincide with those of the lithological units. This is easily understood when it is realized that changes in lithological development mean changes in environ mental conditions which have a decisive effect on the biofacies. Under these conditions, lithological units are in practice identical with the bio stratigraphical units and take the name of the latter. 40 P R I N C I P L E S O F ZOOLOGICAL MlCROPALAEONTOLOGY Less frequent are the cases in which there is divergence between the boundaries of the lithological and biostratigraphical units.

The compo sition of the dye is as follows: Haematoxylin 0*24 g Aluminium chloride 1-6 g Water 24 cm 3 This solution is boiled and then cooled and a small volume of hydrogen peroxide is added. The thin section is then immersed for 5 min, the calcite being stained violet while the dolomite remains unstained. Calcite and aragonite are differentiated by the Meigen reaction. The tests are boiled for about two minutes in diluted cobalt nitrate solution; calcite tests remain unstained while the aragonite ones become slightly violet.
