For Mormons the wicked do not end up in hell, where most Christian theologies locate them, but in the third kingdom of heaven. Only those who denied the Holy Spirit after knowing it intimately and chose to give themselves to Lucifer rather than Christ went to the true hell, a dark place where Satan presided. Less wicked people could repent rather than suffering in hell forever. This vision of the "three degrees of glory," as Mormons call them, made God seem more forgiving than the traditional Christian God.
