1 THE CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT The 80386 might be inadequate for most uses on modern desktop computers, but it’s not completely useless. The 80386 continues to see life in certain embedded applications. The most spectacular of these might be on the International Space Station, which uses 80386 CPUs to control many of its components. NASA uses the 80386 rather than more sophisticated designs in part because it takes a long time to certify a product for use in space. NASA also favors the 80386 because the larger size of circuit traces on the 80386 (relative to those of more recent members of the x86 family) makes the 80386 more resistant to cosmic rays.

Because of publication delays, therefore, information presented in a book can’t be completely up-to-date and accurate by the time you read it. This section covers the state of the CPU marketplace in early 2000, and includes information on upand-coming CPUs, so it should remain relevant throughout 2000. For the most current information, however, you should consult the CPU manufacturers’ Web sites. 1 THE CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT A handful of Linux programs, such as some MPEG playback software, can be to take advantage of these instructions.

The Pentium MMX CPUs are distinctly outmoded, however. I recommend using them only as upgrades for older systems or if you have some special need, such as if you’ve obtained a Pentium motherboard for free—and even then, a CPU from the AMD K6 line is likely to produce better performance than an Intel Pentium CPU. Pentium CPUs can be used in multi-processor motherboards, however, whereas AMD and Cyrix Pentium-class CPUs cannot. If you want a new Intel-powered system, a Pentium-III CPU is probably your best bet, although a high-end Pentium-II or Celeron can be adequate for some purposes.
