Oolitic and reefal limestones are the more common carbonate types used as building stone. Crinoidal and other bioclastic carbonate rocks in Upper Jurassic formations are also worked. Several brecciated carbonate deposits that display features characteristic of karst diagenesis supplement this market. Cretaceous formations, in particular Urgonian reefs and several carbonate breccia beds, also provide a variety of carbonate building stone that have been used in local construction. Both marine and continental limestone of Tertiary age has been exploited in the Paris Basin and in areas located in SE France.

Yellow fine-grained dolomitic marble of Triassic age showing Mn-oxide stringers from SE Spain is marketed in the Far East. These are just Fig. 3. Exploitation of metamorphic marble of Lower Jurassic age in Carrara, Apuan Alps, northern Italy. The height of the working benches reaches up to 8 m. MEDITERRANEAN CARBONATE ROCKS white, but the metamorphic marble locally shows grey banding. The purest, fully recrystallized marble is known as ‘statutario’ marble. Other varieties include ‘Marmo ordinario’, ‘Marmo venato’, ‘Marmo nuvolato’, ‘Marmo arabescato’ and ‘Marmo calacata’.
