These are largely, although not exclusively, everyday experiential forms of learning the city which any urban dweller can relate to, but which are experienced in radically different ways through relations of class, gender, race, age, religion, and so on.

Paraisópolis is a settlement of some 70,000 people located on the steep hills of southern São Paulo. Adjacent to the settlement is Morumbi, an élite gated suburb that towers above the red-brick neighbourhood (Caldeira, 2000). Late in the afternoon, Gabriella took a detour to show me what she described as an entirely unique house. She was not exaggerating. The man who came to the spectacular arched doorway knew Gabriella, and narrated the story of how he built the house through amalgamating coloured stone and just about any object that came to hand, constructing the house from the sea of everyday life.

I have outlined a notion of assemblage as a spatial grammar of urban learning focusing on the constitution of learning through relations of history and potential, doing and performance, and structured (although not delimited by) inequalities. Assemblage connotes the processual, excessive, and performative; it is a conception of the spatialities of urban learning as an unfolding of distinct sociomaterial rationalities and processes through emerging and unequal milieu. Urban assemblages are not simply a spatial category of learning, nor are they outputs or resultant formations.
