A promising area of co-operation is represented by the Group's growing ties with economic integration areas outside Latin America, such as the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The aims of the contracting parties are: to foster co-operation in the Amazon Basin with a view to accelerating the harmonious socio-economic development of their respective Amazon territories; to preserve the environment, making a proper use of natural resources; and to stimulate the relevant initiatives and projects included in national economic plans. The Amazonian Co-operation Treaty, originally proposed by Brazil in 1977, was concluded in July 1978 by all the countries in the Amazon Basin - Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela.
