Stated very simply, for computer system developments, the hardware must be engineered in addition to the system's software. However, we must be careful not to repeat the widely used development paradigm presented in Chapter 1, where the system is divided into software and hardware components at a very early stage, and these are then engineered almost in isolation, each following standard hardware and software development paths. One could consider this approach as 'the engineering of hardware and software components to produce a computer system', whereas more modern approaches to computer system development, including the one presented in this book, are concerned with the engineering of computer systems, some parts of which will be implemented in software and other parts in hardware.
The first three phases defined in Fig. 6 are manual operations, albeit assisted by MOOSEbench, concerned with developing an architecture, specifying behaviour so as to produce an Executable Model, and applying Transformational Codesign techniques to the Executable Model to prepare for the synthesis of the implementation. These phases are described in detail in Chapters 5, 6 and 8. The Platform Model shown in Fig. 6 is developed from the total system model to show the relationship between all of the hardware in the system, which includes all the special purpose hardware, processors, buses and interconnect mechanisms, and the software interfaces into this hardware.
