For the miniature engine maker, its use may well be more in jigs and fixtures, and associated small and special tools which inevitably become necessary to do the job. In the engine itself its main use will be for screws, nuts, washers and studs, because most of the main working components require special properties such as lightness, high strength, stain resistance, heat resistance, and so the materials they are made from are more specialized. Fig. 1-23: A component made in mild steel. This does not mean that there is no use for it in component making, but that it is more limited.
2 Machine Tools and Accessories MACHINERY A good lathe is a basic necessity for any model engineer, as is a bench drill, tool grinder, and lastly a vertical milling machine. ‘Last’ does not mean ‘least’ in this case, as despite the fact that much work may be accomplished without the use of a ‘mill’ (and indeed milling may be done in the lathe), it is an essential piece of equipment for more ambitious work. Other machines may include a band saw for cutting curves in metal plate, a powered hacksaw for cutting material to size, a fly press, or arbour press, for pressing bushes into housings, connecting rods, bearing housings – in fact the list may seem endless, and much depends upon how much hand work and ‘making do’ the modeller is prepared to do, and of course how much cash is available!
Such special tools may include drills for flat-bottomed holes, valve-seating cutters, small fly cutters and suchlike – indeed, almost any small cutting tool that is a ‘one-off’ or of limited use, especially in the cutting of aluminium alloys where it often excels. Components that benefit from being made out of high carbon steel may include cams and tappets, rocker arms, spindles, and valve collets amongst many others. All these may be hardened and tempered, or indeed just left unhardened, as the wear resistance is very good and will often suffice without further treatment.
