These investigations were carried out during the second half of the year when the waters were ice free. Their analysis suggested more extensive distribution of major concentrations than indicated by Savvatimsky (1969) (Figure 4). The first comprehensive analysis of Canadian research vessel data was carried out by Parsons (1976). Catches were greatest off Funk Island Bank (Division 3K), Hamilton Bank (Division 2J) and the northern third of Labrador (divisions 2G and 2H). More recent Canadian data (Atkinson and Power 1987b) suggest that the largest concentrations reside off West Greenland (Subarea 1) - an area not included to a large extent in Parson's (1976) database - and in divisions 2G, 2H and 3K with somewhat smaller catches in Division 21.
